I have a feeling they make good soup in wintry Minnesota.
If you read the post about our lovely, local bead shops, you’ll remember that many of the staff at Silver Sparrow Beads are from Minnesota. It turns out that section of Canon St. in Manitou could be called Minnesota Row. Four stores in a row have some connection to that very northern state!
Kirsten and her mom, Kelly, owners of Good Karma Coffee Lounge & Deli, moved here from there with their soup recipes. They opened the cozy restaurant about five weeks ago.
I stood in line, trying to decide what to get. First off, coffee.

“Are the mochas sweet?”, I asked. “I like to be able to taste the coffee.”
“No,” replied Kirsten. “We like the coffee too.”
A good mocha (and it was good!) deserves a good snack, right? I couldn’t decide what to get, but luckily I had a friend with me, so I ate the soup and she let me try a bit of her Bacon Provolone Quiche.

Next time, I’ll get a whole piece to myself! The bacon flavor came through nicely and the egg custard had a yummy, moist texture. They offer interesting flavors, like Spinach Almond.
We sat down at a table by the window, watching people come and go. Several people stopped in for coffee-to-go and others sat down with big sandwiches. Since we couldn’t try everything, I’ll have to go back. They had quite an array of sandwiches, soup, quiche and salad!

If I was a bit braver, I would have asked another patron if I could take a picture of their lunch. Another day, perhaps.
And desserts. Let’s not forget dessert.
Stop in and try this place next time you’re in Manitou! The food was really satisfying and the space, comfortable. Kelly has a way with comfort food and Kirsten has the perfect, warm personality for a restaurant owner. She chatted with us, giving suggestions and answering my thousand questions. We felt very welcome.
It’s snowing and the wind is thundering by my window as I write this. Maybe I’ll head over there today. What a great day for soup!
